Hawler Medical University Structure
Hawler Medical University (HMU) was founded by the Council of Ministers of the Kurdistan Regional Government in July 2005 and was endorsed by the Council of Ministers of the Iraqi Federal Government in March 2006. The university was established to include in itself the four colleges that were belonging to Salahaddin University in Erbil; College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, College of Pharmacy and College of Nursing. The university was expanded later to include, in addition to the previously mentioned colleges, the College of Health Sciences and the Medical Research Center, as its listed below:

College of Medicine
The College of Medicine of Hawler Medical University is the oldest medical institution in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. It was founded in 1977 as part of Sulaimaniyah University; then became one of Salahaddin University's colleges in 1981. The period of study in the College is 6 years. Students will be awarded the degree of M.B.Ch.B (Bachelor in Medicine and General Surgery) upon completion of their study. English is the language of instruction throughout the period of study. Each year, an average of 140 students are admitted. Students get clinical training at a number of affiliated teaching hospitals in Erbil City where the teaching staff also offer consultation services to the community in all the clinical specializations. The College of Medicine also provides education and training for Higher Diploma students in majority of clinical specialties including some subspecialties. It is also a recognized center for MSc and PhD students in almost all basic and a number of clinical medical sciences. The College of Medicine is comprised of the following scientific departments; Department of Anatomy and Histology, Department of Biochemistry, Department of Community Medicine, Department of Medicine, Department of Microbiology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Department of Pathology, Department of Pharmacology and Biophysics, Department of Physiology, Department of Psychiatry, Department of Pediatrics and Department of Surgery.

College of Dentistry
The College of Dentistry of Hawler Medical University was founded in 1995, as the first Dentistry college in Kurdistan region. The College receives up to 70 students each year. The study in the college is 5 years and the students get a B.D.S (bachelors degree). The college also provides opportunity of postgraduate studies including MSc and PhD degrees in different specialties of dentistry. The college has good relation with the community as it provides best available treatment to patients attending the teaching clinics. The teaching clinics at the college offer all types of treatment to people by the 4th and 5th study year students as well as the MSc and PhD candidates under the supervision of the university teaching staff. 
The College of Dentistry is comprised of the following scientific departments; Department of Conservative Dentistry, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Periodontology, Department of Pedodontics, Operative and Preventive Dentistry, Department of Prosthodontics, Department of Basic Sciences, and Department of Oral Diagnosis. 

College of Pharmacy 
The College of Pharmacy of Hawler Medical University was founded in 1997, and it was the first college of pharmacy established in the Kurdistan region, Iraq. The college offers BSc degree in Pharmacy. The college admits around 70 undergraduate students each year. 
The college also offers MSc degree in different topics of pharmacy in addition to PhD degree in a number of topics.
The College of Pharmacy is committed to the education of professional and graduate students who, upon graduation, can meet the public need for safe and effective pharmaceutical care. Students and college staff generate and disseminate knowledge contributing to the education and continual professional growth of pharmacists, educators, scientists, and other healthcare professionals. The College of Pharmacy is comprised of the following scientific departments; Department of Pharmacognosy, Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Department of Pharmacology, Department of Pharmaceutics, and Department of Clinical Analysis. 

College of Nursing 
The College of Nursing of Hawler Medical University was founded in 2002, as the first Nursing college in Kurdistan region. It is a dynamic center of educational excellence and a community of integrity and caring. The faculty staff and administration of the college work together to prepare competent and caring professional nurses and midwives for leadership roles in the healthcare community. The College of Nursing is one of the most comprehensive nursing schools in Iraq with undergraduate and graduate programs. It is one of the largest colleges of nursing in Iraq and Kurdistan Region. The college has a reputation for excellent academic performance, clinical knowledge, and leadership ability of its students and graduates. The college offers BSc degree in Nursing and it will be the first college to offer BSc degree in Midwifery in Kurdistan and even in Iraq. The college also offers MSc degree in different topics of nursing in addition to PhD degree in a number of topics. The College of Nursing is comprised of the following scientific departments; Department of Nursing and Department of Midwifery. 


College of Medicine - Hawler Medical University


College of Health Sciences 
The College of Health Sciences was founded in 2012. The aim of the College of Health Sciences is to prepare highly qualified and trained medical laboratory technologists in healthcare system that become expertise in a wide range of disciplines including diagnosis of hospital-associated infections. The college aspires to be a recognized contributor in creating and applying new knowledge and technologies to improve health outcomes through a renowned college’s program. The college offers BSc degree in Medical Microbiology and BSc degree in Clinical Biochemistry. 
The College of Health Sciences is comprised of the following scientific departments; Department of Medical Microbiology and Department of Clinical Biochemistry. 

Medical Research Center 
The Medical Research Center of Hawler Medical University was founded in 2008. The Medical Research Center is a governmental, non-profit institute. The center is intended to become a big pioneer research center in Erbil and the Kurdistan region. It provides training on various stages of research and supports the university researchers to undertake high quality research in different areas of interest. Training is provided on research methodology, biostatistics, research writing and reference management, use laboratory equipment such as conventional and real time PCR machines gel electrophoresis. The Medical Research Center is comprised of the following scientific departments; Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health, Department of Molecular Medicine, Department of Cancer Research and Drug Development, Department of Nutrition, and Department of Women’s Health.
